THE MILL ON THE FLOSS

The mill on the Floss is the most popular novel by George Eliot. It is also perhaps her most autobiographical novel. The story represents the typical Victorian problems of morality and moral order which spares nobody.

The title has two things to mention/represent. The Mill is imaginary mill “Dorlcote Mill” owned by Mr. Tulliver, and second part of the title suggests the name of the river Floss on which the mill is located.

Mr. Tulliver is proud obstinate man who became bankrupt and dies of the shock of bankrupt, leaving his son and daughter in highly strained circumstances. The plot of the novel is Maggie’s loves stories with various persons.
Initially Maggie enchanted by Loves Philip and fall in love with him, though Philip and Maggie truly loves each other they failed to understand each other. Then Maggie come in contact with Stephen Guesta Maggie attracted to him because of his handsomeness and superficial charm, but here too she is betrayed by Stephen who uses her and then left her to suffer.
When Maggie turned to home with hope that at least her family members will accept her, and would respect her, understand her pain. But she was turned out of home by her brother and even boycotted by all except Philip and Maggie’s cousin sister.
Maggie has to suffer acute mental agony for violation moral principles when she goes on a boating expedition with Stephen. Her agony is similar to that suffered by Eliot. She herself when she went ot live without genuine matrimonial sanctity with Mr. Lewes and she was also turned out of her house by her brother.  The novel gives picture of the Victorian society, how it was difficult to live for woman in that society.
